DIGITAL DOER
ZHANG ZHOUJIE
We visited the studio of Shanghai-based independent designer Zhang Zhoujie. As one of the representatives among young Chinese independent designers, Zhoujie has been exploring the way to digitally fabricate objects. He applies a digital approach to the traditional industrial production.
After graduated from the design school of Central Saint Martins in London in 2010, Zhang Zhoujie came to Shanghai and set up his own design studio. Inspired by Taoism and technology he learned, Zhoujie started to try new ways of design. As he could not find any proper manufacturer in the market, he spent 18 months studying welding, cutting, grinding, polishing and producing. He creates a new way of fabrication by pushing the limits of possible. Thus, he is able to combine the traditional handcraft and the cutting edge digital technology to make the virtual in reality.
Zhang Zhoujie’s works have been showcased in more than 30 exhibitions around the world, and been collected by many galleries and collectors. He has won a lot of awards, including EDIDA Young Design Talent (China) in 2012, IF Design Award (China) and SHDC 50/100 Young Designers of 2012.
Zhang Zhoujie is an unreasonable man.
