UNREASONABLE PEOPLE ARE PEOPLE THAT DON’T GIVE UP. EVEN IF OTHERS TELL THEM THEY CAN’T DO SOMETHING, THEY’LL STILL PERSIST TO DO IT.

ZHANG QUAN

GRASSROOTS ARTIST

ZHANG QUAN

He says: “A lot of the contemporary art we see today doesn’t cater to children at all. They walk out of a museum with a foggy head, not having understood anything.”

He says: “I want to make art that can be understood by anyone – even children. Only then I am truly happy. It’s like planting a seed in your garden, when it grows it’s such a gratifying feeling.”

He’s Zhang Quan, and his seed in the garden is the noodle shop he opened with his friend “Fattie”. You’ll find their small shop in Nanjing’s Nanhu district, selling the local delicacy of pork intestine noodles. On top of that, they also sell a strange collection of random products: whisks, hot-water bottles, toilet brushes. Even stranger, customers are paying with “one bowl”, “five bowls” or “ten bowls” of “Fei Chang” (pork intestine) notes. The strangeness seems to spread, as these notes are swapped out for services and products in neighbouring mom-and-pop stores. Aside from attracting bewilderment, these notes also serve as a means to involve everyone — even the district’s locals — to participate in the art project that hides behind the facade of this strange little noodle shop.

Zhang Quan is an Unreasonable person.
